Military Technical Academy "Ferdinand I" was established in Bucharest, Romania, on 14 September 1949 with the mission “to train officers with adequate technical education for the specific services, necessary to staff commands, units, formations, and specialized military institutions”. It is accredited as a state higher education institution of the Ministry of National Defence, integrated into the national education system, and trains engineer officers as well as military and civilian specialists through Bachelor, Master and Doctoral programmes, in the fundamental field of engineering sciences, for the Ministry of National Defence, Ministry of Administration and Interior, Special Telecommunications Service, Romanian Intelligence Service, External Intelligence Service, economic agents as well as other national and international beneficiaries.
New Bulgarian University in the country’s capital, Sofia, is a private liberal arts institution established on 18 September 1991 after a resolution by the Bulgarian Parliament. NBU has significantly contributed to higher education in the country as a whole; leading the way for the introduction of a credit system, encouraging continuing education, as well as welcoming to the country many professional degree programmes such as bachelors and masters. It is an accredited partner since 2004 of the Open University UK, and its motto is “ne varietatem timeamus”, which when translated from Latin means “let us not fear diversity.”
